Author Cinquanta Cox-Smith has penned, published, and designed over 500 titles. Her “Journeys of the Heart” series, and her book, "How to Self-Publish for under $100” have changed many lives. Most people call her the Cliffhanger Author. Hers is one of the Black-owned businesses that empower people. She created this brand to open the Coin dialogue when speaking about creative ways to make money. This Black-owned clothing brand promotes the idea that what you wear can help you network. You don’t even have to speak. She created this new T-shirt and accessories company to support the serial entrepreneurs, and it is her contribution toward starting the coin conversation. Their designs help people to “coin” the room when they walk in. The motto at Coins and Connections is “Make Money, Spend Money.”

Honestly, I don't even remember the exact moment I became addicted to candles. I just remember every time I walked into a store that had a candle section, I would stand there and sniff every candle on the shelf. I always felt something so magical about the power of fragrance through illuminating a candle; it has always transported me to nostalgic memories. Several years passed before I finally followed my heart to learn the process of candle making. In 2014, I made the decision to learn how to make candles the artisanal way, and fell in love with the process. With quality candles and sustainability dear to my heart, Collectively Curated Scents was born in 2017. My candle line has a minimal yet modern aesthetic coupled with a natural eco-friendly clean burn. Every candle is scented with phthalate-free premium fragrance or essential oils. All candles are hand-poured in micro-batches with natural coconut-blended wax and given a zinc-free, natural, flat cotton wick. I hope every one of my candles brightens up your life and home.

ColorFullXChange creator and owner, Tess Shimoyama, has been natural since 2006. She has tons of experience with natural hair. After several “big chops” of her own, the one in 2015 was something different. She has always had a passion for hair care and quality hair care products. Not a stylist but a wife and a stay-at-home mom of two, Tess created something innovative for Philly’s natural hair scene. ColorFullXChange was created after sitting on the hallway floor overwhelmed with the amount of products she had and didn’t use. The thought of a product swap came to mind instantly but where? When? How? The summer of 2016, Tess hosted the first (natural) hair product Swap event in the tristate area, Manes & Mimosas. Participants come to exchange new or gently-used hair products as well as hair tips & tricks while being educated on hair care topics such as coloring, cutting/trimming, styling & proper maintenance, by a licensed hair stylist. Tess created partnerships with local vendors (boutiques & business) so event goers can support small businesses while enjoying some retail therapy. The event was successful and four events later, ColorFullXChange had become more than ever anticipated. During this time of evolution for ColorFullXChange, Tess dealt with some unexpected issues with severe dry scalp during her pregnancy with her son. Her Dermatologist prescribed two medicated shampoos that were harsh and dried out her hair. So Tess took matters into her own hands to combat her diagnosis of seborrheic dermatitis aka adult cradle cap. After researching essential oils and comparing high-priced product lines, Tess’ Oil Blend™? was born. Tess has big plans for ColorFullXChange so stayed tuned. In the meantime, make sure you’re following the IG and FB pages and you join the Facebook group for updates, articles and sales!
African-American business owner Essence Hayes says that she always wanted to wear pins. But she did not see any for her on the market. There are tons of cute pins, but none of them resonated with her or made her feel like she had to have them. “I wanted a pin that was an extension of me,” says Hayes. I wanted to be able to walk with a pin that spoke before I did.” Coloring Pins is here to add a bit more color to the pin game. This company manufactures black-themed pins. It is a Black-owned business that represents people of color. It is also here for the mis- and underrepresented. This company wants people to feel and see themselves in a trendy market. They plan to expand to apparel and other merchandise. In this way, they can complement their fashionable accessories.
Deborah Ajaja, the Founder of Colour Celebrations started the company after the birth of her son Noah. As a proud first time Mother, she was keen to share pictures of her precious little baby with friends and family as he grew and hit his various developmental milestones. Having been gifted several sets, she struggled to find any which were representative of her son’s hue or her family’s culture and the variety of colourful celebrations they honored. When she realised that this was truly a problem and there was a gap in the market, the Colour Celebrations Milestone Cards were born and she worked tirelessly to bring the vision to life. Colour Celebrations’ raison d’être is to help families celebrate their beautiful cultures in an inclusive way and capture babies’ memories that will last a lifetime. Deborah lives in London with her husband and son.
