Cocoiv is a Black-owned clothing brand dedicated to paying homage to every Black mom one tee at a time. The hope is that it sparks a conversation of memories, love, knowledge and wisdom. Cocoiv came about to give a voice to black motherhood. It is the brainchild of African-American business owner Raven Barrett. She created this company because she could not imagine returning to a 9 to 5 job after the birth of her daughter. The company highlights black mom sayings, everyday life, racial disparities, and parenting. It looks at these issues from a Black woman's perspective. Cocoiv acknowledges the dynamic of all the roles of a mom. It doesn't matter if the mom is old school, millennial, or a combination of the two. Cocoiv curates collections to empower moms with a little nostalgia.

When I was expecting my first child I read a lot about what to expect during pregnancy. I even went as far as buying the 1000-page Mayo Clinic Book of Pregnancy and Baby’s First Year. What I didn't read about was; what to expect after giving birth and how to care for myself during recovery. During postpartum I was clueless about the realities. I lost so much blood during my c-section surgery that I was diagnosed with postpartum anemia and had to get a blood transfusion. I wasn’t prepared for how completely immobile c-section makes you. I never imagined it would hurt like hell or that I would cry the first time I tried to walk. No one mentioned the sheer exhaustion that happens in the first few days home. I didn’t know you could have postpartum ailments; I had an umbilical hernia. With all my unexpected ailments, I missed my hospital stay when I got home. At the hospital, the nurses were at my beck and call with a push of a button. I was pampered with bite size products that made my recovery less painful. But when I got home the reality hit me, I was out of supplies, in a lot of pain and on my own. It’s because of all these experiences CODDLE was born.
