Black-owned businesses come in all forms, and Akwati Style is no exception. Angel J, the owner, is a 30-something woman obsessed with travel, sewing, and fashion. She calls herself the "curator" of this black-owned clothing brand. Angel is a self-taught "sewist." She creates clothing sourced from textiles originating from all over the world. Whenever she travels, as a memento, she brings home souvenirs. She likes to buy cool accessories or attractive fabric to make style items. Stemming from her love for fashion and sewing, the Akwati Style brand was born. With Akwati Style, customers, or (#akwatiangels) get to shop her suitcase. She sources these items from GLOBAL locations. #Akwatigangels can buy textiles and unique accessories that she has CURATED. She then stitches textiles obtained from those trips into fashion-forward clothing for all to enjoy.
A young man from Togo, West Africa, planted the seed of Alaffia in 1996. Together with a young woman from Washington State, he formed this social enterprise, which has now flourished into a thriving business. Their inspiration was a shared calling to do right by the world. Founded in 2003, Alaffia continues to redefine the natural black-owned hair products industry. The company's core values are Beauty, Equality, Empowerment, fair trade, and safe, efficient hair, face, and body care. All the pieces in the Queen Alaffia collection are one of a kind works of art. Pieces are handmade at the Alaffia Artisan Center in Sokodé, Togo, West Africa. This black-owned business rehabilitates women who fell prey to the sex trade. Queen Alaffia offers a stable income and respectable environment. They aim to end the need for these women to sell their bodies to provide for themselves and their families. Alaffia features a wide selection of bath, body, hair, and skin products and remains committed to its mission of social impact.

Alaiyo is another one of the unique black-owned companies on our list. African American business owner, Jasai, is the inspiration behind the brand. She is a certified Kundalini Yoga instructor and author of The New FastGirls. She is also a mindfulness facilitator, which means she teaches people how to be with what is, precisely as it is. Her focus is on clarity, grace, and compassion. Jasai uses tools of refraining, including fasting, silence, and stillness, to illuminate the truth. Being connected to the present moment is the only real and lasting freedom available to us all. She has recently added the art and practice of waist bead wearing to her toolkit. Waist beads provide women with the opportunity to reconnect to their center. They help women rediscover their endless reservoirs of beauty, power, balance, and being.
Moussa is a metal-smith, designing gorgeous jewelry using sterling silver, Tuareg silver, and semi-precious stones. His techniques include engraving intricate geometric designs, using decorative inlay, and a lost wax process. Many of his pieces show the repoussé style by which he hammers a shape on the reverse side, creating a raised design on the front. This style is a slow process, taking hundreds of hours, but it maximizes the touch, feel, and visual beauty of the piece. Moussa was taught by his father and uncles and in turn he has taught his sons and nephews.

Alchemy Body Shop founder always leaned into creating things from scratch. This trend started since she was young. She created her beauty line because the black-owned skincare brands were lacking. Anything natural and organic was unaffordable. Growing up with sensitive skin, she knew the woes that came with not having variety. It seemed like only chemicals were flooding the beauty and skincare aisles. She was desperate to find a natural solution without the overpriced fluff. That’s when Alchemy Body Shop was born. This black-owned business came from a need for honest and clean products. Her clients needed a brand that is affordable and sustainable. Lots of like-minded WOC are out there (Alchemy sees you!) who share the passion and pull of wellness. If you are looking for clean beauty, Alchemy has declared, look no further.
Alero Jasmine is a black-owned clothing brand that creates handmade UK based creations inspired by African heritage, intricate patterns, and travels. Eye-catching textures and prints have always fascinated the founder, Aasiyah. She projects her love for expressing her vibrant, dynamic culture through every garment. She is thankful to her clients for embracing her bursts of creativity. AleroJasmine is Aasiyah’s middle name. Alero is the name given to firstborn daughters of Itsekiri (a Nigerian ethnic group) families. It means that someone has set the foundation to blossom. Jasmine is the befitting floral suffix. Aasiyah designs all pieces and passes them on to Lagosian artisans for production. She compensates these talented craftspeople at a rate of 3.5 times the minimum wage in Nigeria because sustaining African artisanal jobs is essential to the brand.
