Duodu London

Hair & Headwear, Accessories, Fashion, Clothing, Tees, Unisex, Childrens, Other, Miscellaneous

Duodu London fuses traditional African print with contemporary fashion. The brand draws inspiration from its founders African roots. Designer Danny Kay Duod grew up in Ghana, where from a young age he used his own designs to personally explore the process of screen printing onto cloth. It was then that he set up a small business selling prints to women in the local community. From this sparked Danny’s interest in apparel design and production. Duodu London launched in 2012 as a line of t-shirts screen printed with hand drawn designs inspired by African tribal art. The brand has now expanded to offer a collection of tailored waistcoats, bow ties and pocket squares, alongside a line of bomber jackets. All garments are proudly designed and produced in London.

As a person who lives at the intersection of multiple marginalized identities, art has helped me contextualize how I navigate this world. Mixed-media collage and sculpture has become the way that I can tangibly arrange these different aspects of my existence into a whole. As my practice has expanded, I’ve arrived at a place where I desire to explore those intersections communally. The themes of my previous work dealt mostly with myself, understanding my body, the clichés surrounding it, and the violence inflicted upon it. I looked to art history to explore how being a fat black woman and being inserted into common narratives brought new context to them. Now I have turned to systems of divination as a medium through which I can not only explore my own perception of self, but the interconnectedness of my experiences with others. I was inspired by my own spiritual journey deconstructing, decolonizing and disconnecting from my Christian heteropatriarchal foundations. My current series of paintings "From Dust to Onyx" uses tarot as an avenue to visually explore the rich and complex layers of Blackness. The series contains 78 paintings created through mixed media collage, layering materials from paper clippings to sand and glitter. These applications are a way of exploring the intersections of Black identity while featuring historical facts, cultural myths, traditions, symbolism, and icons throughout the Black Diaspora. I collect the shards of my own identity as a black/fat/queer woman and piece them into a mosaic of works that present blackness as universal spirit—in contrast to the idea of whiteness and light that formed a wedge between my personal experience of higher consciousness and ancestral connection. Using mixed media collage, I explore the complexities of blackness as a human experience and as a color story wrought with negative connotations. In turn, I re-imagine a timeless world that feels deeply ancient yet intrinsically intertwined in this modern realm, birthed from a a place of nothingness that is also simultaneously everything. A non-binary world where I see myself, reflections of blackness, and darkness, as powerful and eternal. It is important to me that the experience of this work extend beyond gallery walls so viewers are able to re-visit and re-experience the artwork in multiple contexts. This also challenges the accessibility of contemporary art and it’s ability to create conversation not only within white walls, but continuously in personal and intergenerational exchanges of vulnerability. Through tarot cards, viewers can explore the infinite ways this series can be arranged and rearranged, building and changing the interrelationships between each card as a compelling tool for healing, community empowerment, and social justice. Using divination systems as a vehicle makes this work a tool of resistance and transformation not just politically, but at the root of one's spirit.

DVees

Food & Beverage, Coffee & Tea, Condiments & Spices, Other

Women Owned, Family Owned

Birth by our love for food, DVees was founded by four sisters; the Aghoghovbia Girls. The name DVees was coined from the fact all our names start with the letter ‘V’, The Vees eventually became DVees. Growing up with parents who showered us with love, food was one of their expressions. We spent many nights ‘gisting’, laughing and creating beautiful recipes, many times with mum and dad. It is no surprise food became a big part of our lives. Our love for food is our family heritage. We grew up with a dad who loves good food. We had numerous cooking and baking sessions with him, from making crab soup to homemade cakes. He always came home with food from the latest restaurant he discovered or the staples like suya from the family country club in Lagos; Ikoyi Club. While he encouraged the flare for the western twist, Mum made sure we knew how to throw it down in the kitchen African style. With her occasional and often spontaneously organised cooking lessons, we were well equipped to prepare authentic African dishes. Our love for food has built a desire to share our rich culture and heritage which celebrates food, our unique burst of flavours and the ingenuity of West African cooking. We are passionate about pioneering West African fine dining and flavours through the creation of unique products. At DVees we say, “An exceptional culinary experience is better with laughter and great company”. We hope you enjoy, preferably with family and friends!

E.B.O Beard Butter

Health & Beauty, Beardcare

I started making beard butter in college. I created EBO beard butter (EBO are the intials of my name) After working one it and it was just a plain scent. Getting advice from my mom, who is a soap maker, I choose other scents and began to make EBO Beard Butter. I make all the beard butter in house using huge mixers to blend the oils and fragrances. The response was amazing, and the business began to grow. I started to sell at markets, shows and social media. It continued to grow and then I began to have someone sell it for me on Etsy. As my popularity grew I decided to branch out on my own and started my own Etsy Shop Ebo Beard butter. I wear many hats from chemist, mixer, packaging, marketing and shipment. It has been an adventure for me. Its a one man operation, but for now that what's best for me. My future look bright and I predict EBO Beard butter will go from a one man operation to a global force.
