Paper Play + Wonder

In our tech-saturated world, if you were to put a couple of boxes, pots and pans in front of kids they'd create buses, firetrucks, drum sets and numerous other things just from their imaginations! That is a huge part of what drives the passion here at Paper Play + Wonder. I want to foster creativity and fun fueled by imagination! After all, imaginations are terrible things to waste! ? Closely related to the power of imagination is the power of images. There is something to be said about turning on the television or browsing online and seeing positive images that look like you. At the start of 2020, Paper Play + Wonder was born. As a mom of three African-American kids, I felt a drive to create something for my children and children all over who, like them, were unaccustomed to seeing their likenesses in their toys. Each time I begin a new illustration, I do so with the intent of fostering and encouraging cultural pride, positive self identity and belonging. One of my greatest joys when working on the launch of my shop, was to have my children come in, glance at one of my prints and ask “Oh! Is that me!?”. Representation is so important - at any age - and I’m honored to share a piece of my heart with my family, friends and the community at large. Please stay a while and enjoy looking around my shop!

Hello, I'm Janell Langford and I'm a graphic artist living in Santa Fe, New Mexico. For me drawing is therapeutic, It’s my self-care. I don’t feel whole or complete if I’m not being creative. Ever since I was a little girl I remember drawing being like a superpower. Even though I grew up in a house filled with chaos, if I was drawing I was able to block out the noise and be at peace. After high school, I started dating someone seriously and at that time I stopped drawing. The relationship became just as toxic and chaotic as my childhood and I had completely forgotten about my superpower. I suppressed the one thing in life that was my home frequency. Once I ended the relationship I started drawing again. The pain of the breakup lead me back to drawing and a rediscovery of my inner creativity. I've spent the majority of my adult life in white spaces, so it became important to me to begin to illustrate the representation that was missing from my surroundings and the media I consumed. From Michelle Obama's speeches to Beyonce’s Coachella performance I am overwhelmingly inspired by powerful black women. I begin to feel SEEN in reading Octavia Butler, hearing Janelle Monae talking about cyborgs, watching attorney Maxine Shaw on Living Single, and experiencing a live Santigold performance. Representation is everything. Soon I began the graphic design program at Seattle Central Design Academy. There I learned that I was passionate about creating a lifestyle brand that spoke truth to the kind of art that I wanted to see. That's how Obsidiopolis was born. The name comes from the word Obsidian, which is a protective stone that shields against negativity and also is a truth-enhancer. Black women and girls need to be encouraged to stand in their truth even when the world is not ready to listen. Obsidiopolis is a refuge, a sanctuary for black women and femmes to be empowered and inspired. After all, black women are from the future. When I'm not drawing pictures or daydreaming about a utopia of my own design, I'm watching Steven Universe, Thrifting, having solo dance parties and listening to my favorite podcasts.

My name is Loretta and welcome to the Radical Hearts Print Lab! This one-woman shop* doubles as my creative exploration zone and is fueled by my passion for progressive community activism and the visual arts. Through Radical Hearts, I aim to provide unique bold designs for activists, community leaders, feminists and progressive individuals - basically anyone and everyone who is seeking inspirational sources of empowerment, like I had been throughout my own activist journey. The wide variety of items I create aims to support radical causes, pay tribute to revolutionary trailblazers; and serve as beautiful daily reminders of our individual and collective power to ignite meaningful change - all while remaining inclusive and affordable for all. I originally started Radical Hearts Print Lab during the Spring of 2015. The idea was born out of a personal challenge to create a few pieces of wall art with inspiring messages that I could surround myself with as motivation to stay strong as I felt the overwhelming burden of various inequalities beginning to weigh heavily on me and my loved ones. But within the first few months of initially dabbling in this new project (which involved designing, printing and shipping my designs from the corner of my bedroom - and selling them internationally online!), I realized that I had uncovered a powerful platform that not only was personally rewarding but also enabled me to connect with and inspire others on their own journeys. Since then, Radical Hearts and I have grown into a budding small business on a mission - to provide that extra boost of empowerment so that we can each continue supporting the causes we believe in and fighting back against injustice! As they say "The Struggle is Real," but it doesn't mean we have to go it alone. During the Fall of 2016, Radical Hearts started in a new direction with the introduction of a new line of apparel and accessories. Check out the newest items here to find a special piece or two for you or to even share with a friend. Because, honestly? If we are going to create a world that we can be proud to pass along, we are going to need all the pretty positive reminders of our strength & determination that we can get!

For those of us who have chosen art, it is not a career or a hobby, but a passion, a way of life. Creativity is not limited by frames or borders but, is an endless expression of life and love. Who we are is seen through colors and images; pictures and videos; art, is our way in and our way out. The world is your canvas and you are the art. why are you doing it ? I do art because its the only thing that i know how to do. Whenever i get emotional, i feel the need to be holding a paint marker or a paint brush. I consume myself with art. what does your art express? My art convays pure and raw emotion. I like to call them "In the moment" emotions. My pieces are my time to speak even if i can't express it in words. My art means everything to me. What kind of materials do you use? I have this theory where i don't want to limit myself. I love trying, buying and using all types of different materials. I use acrylics, watercolores, pens, markers, paint markers, spray paint, wood burning, photoshop, illustrator, indesign... thats everything i can remeber right now! lol. Many more mediums I have yet to try... but in due time. Who inspires you? A lot of my inspiration comes from Andy Warhol, Basquiat, Keith Haring, and Hokusai just to name a few. I'm also very inspired by pop culture, vintage comics and movies and also varies cartoons.

Tracey always dreamed of making movies. She studied video production at Specs Howard School of Media Arts and upon graduation quickly dove into the world of writing for the screen big and small. She is the co-writer and producer of festival favorite “Annabelle & Bear” and the co-writer, producer and director of “Open City,” a narrative short that uses her unique insight to explore the unknown every day of Detroit’s new urban landscape. Her career in the arts is a new development, but not totally unexpected. Her family is full of artists, writers, crafters, and makers. Working with pigments, inks, and watercolor is a natural extension of her creativity, and a physical manifestation of the colorful graphic designs she’s been making for fun (and profit) going on a decade. Tracey brings a filmic approach to working on each piece; every color and texture tells a story, and each painting is a character with a unique name. If you know her well, she may just name a piece after you... if you’re a powerful, take no sh*t woman, that is.

I am an Actor/Writer who spends a lot of time auditioning, on sets, and in transit. I say positive affirmations when I'm getting ready to perform or work, to center, ground and focus me . I started making origami stars as a way to keep my hands busy and as a sort of meditative practice. I combined my use of affirmations with the origami and that's how the Guiding Stars™ came about. Guiding Stars™ can be used as an uplifting daily surprise. My company is unique because although I have seen other people making these, no one has created a business to share them with the world.
