A young man from Togo, West Africa, planted the seed of Alaffia in 1996. Together with a young woman from Washington State, he formed this social enterprise, which has now flourished into a thriving business. Their inspiration was a shared calling to do right by the world. Founded in 2003, Alaffia continues to redefine the natural black-owned hair products industry. The company's core values are Beauty, Equality, Empowerment, fair trade, and safe, efficient hair, face, and body care. All the pieces in the Queen Alaffia collection are one of a kind works of art. Pieces are handmade at the Alaffia Artisan Center in Sokodé, Togo, West Africa. This black-owned business rehabilitates women who fell prey to the sex trade. Queen Alaffia offers a stable income and respectable environment. They aim to end the need for these women to sell their bodies to provide for themselves and their families. Alaffia features a wide selection of bath, body, hair, and skin products and remains committed to its mission of social impact.

Husband and wife team Jeanine Hays (former policy attorney) and Bryan Mason (PhD. Candidate) founded Aphro Chic in 2007. They wanted to escape to the stresses of work and to share their passion for culture and design. This black-owned interior design firm is Brooklyn-based. It focuses on high-end commercial and residential design. “Modern.Soulful.Style.” is the phrase coined to express their personal vision. It embraces the mixture of the traditional and contemporary. Several newspapers including The New York Times and Washington Post have featured them. They’ve also been in Elle Decor, House Beautiful, and Better Homes and Gardens. Good Morning America and NewsOne Now with Roland Martin have also run stories. In 2017, they produced HGTV’s Sneak Peek with AphroChic. The Hays created this house tour series for HGTV’s Facebook Live channel. Jeanine and Bryan are leading experts in home decor. They produce content for The Spruce, HGTV, Refinery29, Apartment Therapy, and MOYI Magazine. They also promote global brands, such as IKEA Brand Ambassadors. The Hays are also the authors of REMIX: Decorating with Culture, Objects, and Soul.

Avant-garde is what founder and CEO Myeshia Brown kept in mind when she created the brand from her kitchen in 2014. A divine revelation inspired Brown to turn a love for candles into a black-owned business. She began researching the candle market. She also tested variations of wax, wicks, and fragrance combinations. For over 20 months, she put hours into creating the formula. She got what would become the golden recipe for the Avant-garde Home candle and oil line. It was important for Brown to do more than just "create another candle company." She wanted to create an Avant-garde fragrance experience. That experience is now one of the thriving Black-owned companies in Houston.
