Jamie Batiste started this business after a really hard breakup... One day she decided that another creative outlet was warranted that not only would heal herself but heal others who were hurt. "I turned a breakup to a business and regained my independence. We have all had plenty of struggles; it's how you come out of it that matters the most. I create jewelry for Men and Women that transform into stand-out pieces that commands attention and confidence. Always remember to love yourself no matter what or who hurts you."

Social Justice Jewelry was founded by Alaine Hutson and is an African American, woman-owned business based in Austin, TX. Alaine had been approached by people who made remarks that denigrate others. She wanted it to stop. Using her training as a metalsmith, she created the “Allergy” cuff and the #powerofpeace logo in 2016 as a way to let others know, like a medical alert bracelet, that social injustice is bad for your health.

Uwakstar Designs opened in 2018 and is owned and operated in Austin, TX. The company was born out of a desire to create colorful and inspiring fashion that was not available locally. We source our fabrics from all over the world, but our design inspiration comes from looking at the vibrant colors of African print fabrics (Ankara wax print). Our goods are designed for the sophisticated woman that is seeking dynamic, handmade pieces that cannot be found anywhere else. We specialize in crafting leather and fabric handbags and accessories, while also offering the direct purchase of our multicolored fabrics for those wishing to create their own pieces. Over the last year I started crafting again on a consistent basis. I rediscovered my passion as it was fulfilling to take stand alone items and turn them into something someone else would enjoy. An unintended result was seeing how inquisitive my kids became about crafting. Long story short, my desire and passion to craft was the catalyst for my Etsy shop. Hi! I’m Jamila Shaw I was born in Niamey, Niger; grew up in Toledo, OH and moved to Austin, TX in 2014 to pursue my teaching career. I teach AP World History to 10th graders. In February of 2019 I decided to dust off my sewing machine and use the skills my grandmother Connie (a former art teacher, mother of seven, seamstress just to name a few of her talents) taught me when I was in high school to relieve some stress and be creative with my hands again. I started making gifts for my friends and in March I decided to create an Instagram and try my hand at entrepreneurship. This is my journey, to make handmade head-wear for everyone!

How We Started. It all started in 2006 when our Founder, Kim Overton, went for a run with nowhere to comfortably hold her key. Afterwards she went home and assembled the first SPIbelt. After months of hard work, development, and patenting, SPIbelt officially launched in February of 2007 out of Kim’s Austin, Texas apartment. Now you can find SPIbelt products in over 40 countries. Despite SPIbelts international success, its headquarters remain in Austin, Texas where the majority of our products are still being handmade. Continued Excellence.
