Our story begins with the need for melanin women to have a sunscreen brand that caters exclusively to them. From carrying expensive umbrellas to the beach and downright neglecting to go outside all together, our founder thought it was time to create a natural non-white residue sunscreen brand for women of color. 2016 was the year Black Girl Sun Screen was created in the ever-popular city of Miami, Florida. Beach days are always necessary but blotchy makeup and white residue are two things we were frustrated with when enjoying a sunny day. In fact, all outside activities began to come to a halt since we knew how much sun rays would damage the skin. (even ours)

Black Opal was created in 1994 to celebrate the nuances of Black skin. It soon became a beauty revolution–in color, identity, and empowerment. Today, this Black-owned makeup brand represents beauty in every color. Regardless of the uniqueness of one’s shade, tone, or heritage, Black Opal sees it. This company celebrates the fire in the Black woman. It is the creation of two African-American business owners: Desiree G. Rogers and Cheryl Mayberry Kissack. Most recently, Rogers served as CEO of Johnson Publishing Co. She oversaw Fashion Fair Cosmetics, Jet, and Ebony magazines, until June 2017. Mayberry McKissack has 20 years of experience as the CEO of Nia Enterprises, a marketing, entrepreneurial business, and digital consulting firm that she founded in 2000.

Ryan Kinloch is the founder of Blooming Flower, a unique Black-owned business that creates luxurious soaps. The company uses simple but quality ingredients. Kinloch developed an interest in natural beauty products as a graduate student. She was studying chemistry. While in graduate school, Kinloch decided to stop straightening her hair. She wanted to change her look and style. She researched and tried out a variety of products to go with her new hairdo. That was when the chemist in her kicked into overdrive. She realized some of the products people use on their hair and skin might harm their health. Some products on the market don’t even list all the ingredients on the label. So, people don’t always know what they are putting on their bodies. Kinloch committed her black-owned Business to use natural and organic inputs to make its products.

Body & Soul Naturally is a Black-owned business. The brainchild of artisan crafter N. L. Travis, it is one of the artisan and natural Black-owned skincare brands on our list. Travis perfects these products through consistent research and feedback. Here’s why she has the drive to create natural products. Several years ago, her aunt received a diagnosis of stage 4 breast cancer. It had formed in her lymph nodes under the armpit. As she went through treatment, doctors told her to stop the use of antiperspirants. That advice was shocking! That info was the start of research that resulted in the creation of Body & Soul’s Aluminum-Free Deodorant as an answer to the often harmful chemicals found in deodorant. The company’s line of products also includes Whipped Shea Butter, Raw Sugar Scrub, and Beard Butter. Body & Soul also produces Sunscreen, Eczema Cream, Body Wash, and more.
