We’re Michael and Toks. And we’ve been best friends for nearly twenty years. We joined our first gym together as teenagers, and we both had our first jobs together as young adults. We’ve been through a lot together growing up. But we never thought we’d end up in business together. We were determined to solve a problem. Back in 2017, Michael was studying a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Politics at the University of Leeds. Toks was working in the City of London, training to be an actuary. Neither of us had ever learnt how to swim. So we started to learn together – and one day, we met a woman with afro hair who struggled with the size of her swimming cap. And that got us thinking, why weren’t there more products for people blessed with voluminous hair? That one woman we met stuck in our minds. So over the next few weeks, we spoke to our sisters, our mums, and our circle of friends. The more we learnt, the more we started to see a real problem in the health and beauty industry: it was completely overlooking the needs of people with thick, curly, and voluminous hair. We wanted to make what no one else was making. With these hair types in mind, we started to design the first SOUL CAP – an extra-large swimming cap created for swimmers who struggle with their hair. We went through dozens of designs and sourced hundreds of different samples to find the products and manufacturers that met our high standards. Not just in terms of quality – but the ethical standards that we live by. Plenty of people said our market was too niche so we had to work hard to overcome our own doubts. We were both determined: we believed it could be done. We love bringing our ideas to life. Today, we’re more than just best friends - we’re business partners. We love bringing our ideas to life, and we love seeing the reviews and messages from all of our happy customers. We’ve shipped more than 30,000 of our swimming caps to customers all over the world – we’re already working hard to bring you the next product in our line. But we also know how lucky we are – and we believe in giving something back. That’s why we work with The Wonder Foundation, a charity that helps disadvantaged women, girls, and communities through education.
