The designer Aisha Obuobi is from Ghana. She founded her Black-owned clothing brand, Christie Brown, in 2008, in Accra. She borrowed the brand name from her grandmother, who inspired her in fashion. Fashion has always surrounded Obuobi. Her grandma, Christie Brown, was a seamstress who created colorful, elegant African clothes. With Christie as her role model, Obuobi started to experiment with fabric. She wanted to breathe new life into her wardrobe. She got positive feedback from her friends, which encouraged her to launch her fashion label. She defines her style as Neo-African discreet. That means Obuobi mixes African streetwear with traditional elements and international trends. It’s how she develops something new and modern without losing the African roots. This company invigorates and nurtures bold self-expression and encourages audacity, authenticity, and creativity. They create products and presentations that center, honor, and adorn bodies and lives. They empower women and girls of color to revel in who they are. They celebrate and amplify women of color artists, entrepreneurs, activists (and more!).
