Hey Family! If you are reading this, I hope you have a very happy, prosperous, healthy new year! I hope to share many more moments with you all. I appreciate you all being down with me this far and up is the only direction I plan to go with your love and support. Thank you again! A little about me... since I have never formally introduced myself. I am Aleighsha Mitchell. I live in Maryland...the DMV area (Hail to the Redskins...sometimes lol). I am a professional dancer(in my head) and I am a real homebody (that’s where I do most of my dance performances lol). I love everything African and cheetah print. I am obsessed with all serial killer documentaries and rom-coms...go figure. I learned I could paint by accident...sorta. I had been in a really bad place in my life. Mentally, Spiritually, Financially and add any other negative “lly’s”... I was it. I asked God to reveal my gift, whatever it was. I just needed something to help take care of me. I went to visit family three years ago, and out of boredom, I was offered paint and a canvas to pass the time and this is what I came up with. I was so proud. I had never thought about painting. This is what I asked for...just didn’t know yet. So, I went home and showed my family and they encouraged me to keep going. They bought me paint, brushes, canvas and snacks...you need those for all-nighters lol. I asked God before I create anything to use me in His name, as I do with everything, and I went to work. Night after night, no shower (Eww..I know), no sleep...I couldn’t stop. I had painted so much that no longer had anywhere else to hang anything. So I stepped out on faith and decided to share one online.

Singing and designing are two hobbies that have remained a staple for me since I was a child; however, it wasn’t until a dramatic event in 2010 that forced me to create a brand that would forge the two, thus defining & changing my life forever. Saturday afternoons were divided into two categories for me as a child – going to choir rehearsal at church with my family and spending time with my grandmother. While my daddy did her yard work, my grandmother MaDear (as everyone affectionately called her) taught me how to create beautiful fiber art projects using simple stitches that she learned at her local community center. Over the years, I noticed that she continued to teach me the same stitches and projects over & over again: eventually, we discovered that she suffered from Alzheimer’s Disease and she was peacefully laid to rest in 1992. In 2004, I was selected by my church music director to perform a solo with a community choir accompanied by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. During one of our breaks in rehearsal, the principle conductor Lucas Richman had a quick conversation where he was impressed with my instrument and asked me where I studied voice. I told him that I didn’t have any formal vocal training or education, so he advised me to consider classical voice as an option. At 27, I completed an Associate’s degree in Pittsburgh, PA in less than two years with high honors and transferred to the Boyer School of Music & Dance at Temple University to study classical voice & opera. Being in a bigger “shark tank”, I was amazed at how my (younger) classmates carried themselves in the music school: discussing proper dieting & exercise, wearing wraps & scarves, sipping on hot tea to preserve their voice, etc. I wasn’t used to this behavior (I’m self-taught singer from North Carolina) and was bootstrapping my education, so to "look the part" I designed apparel, jewelry, & accessories in my spare time to "fit in with the crowd". The designs were surprisingly popular amongst my peers, faculty, staff, & visiting artists. I had to take a break for financial reasons, so I focused my attention on my new company and opened Fierce Stitch in September 2010.

Ever since I was little I did arts and crafts with my aunt. It has always been a part of my life. A few years ago, I was watching TV with my husband and noticed beaded jewelry all over the place. I told him I could make those. The next day at work, I made my first bracelet and sold it 5 minutes later. People started lining up for my designs and I started making custom-designed beadwork as a side business. In 2019, I wanted to expand into personalized items like hair accessories and pouches so my husband and I invested in a Cricut®. I immediately got to work and received even more orders. I enjoy learning new things and I told my husband I wanted to add embroidery to further customize my designs. He did the research and surprised me with my sewing/embroidery machine. I was a little afraid to even take it out the box because I had never used a sewing machine before. Two days before Christmas in 2019, I made a giant leap and quit my job so that I could focus on my design business full time. Thankfully, my mother-in-law helped me learn the sewing machine over the winter. When the corona virus hit, I was able to create customized masks for people. I am happy to be able to contribute my work during this stressful time, bringing joy to those who want to have a one-of-a-kind mask to wear out in public. I'm excited to continue learning new skills, expanding and evolving my creations. Blinging is all done by hand... one stone at a time, and that is something that will never change.

Hart Form

Waste Not Want Not - the HartForm story Coming from a family of creatives and a background in painting and sculpture, it is difficult not to pick up the habit of collecting odd materials, thinking "I could make something with that!". So in an effort to use my skills as a maker and not end up on an episode of Hoarders, I started this shop. More than that, HartForm was created with the intent to make beautiful things out of what has been discarded, giving new life to worn and abandoned materials, and helping divert waste from landfills. New addition to the shop: my dad! While not all of his jewelry uses upcycled material, he shares my aesthetic and eye for the possibilities of a found object. Welcome, Dad!
