Tribal Truths Collection exalts African culture while staying stylish. It is a tribute to African culture and pride with urbanized versions of traditional women’s clothing including coats, jackets, hats, t-shirts, full length wrap skirts, belts, and leather bags all in bold colors. Brenda created a line from her signature style. It started when someone asked her to recreate a cape she wore. She then sold at craft festivals around New York before becoming a part of 4W Circle in Brooklyn. After ten years of success there, she opened her own boutique in 2004. The Tribal Truths Collection boutique was part of designer’s row on Fulton St. for more than 14 years. In that time, she co-founded the Diaspora Art Mart, now known as the Diaspora Arts Collective. She is also a part of many community activities and events, including the Fort Greene Juneteenth Celebration. Brenda has a distinguished clientele that includes senators, judges, and celebrities like Judith Jameson, Sweet Honey in the Rock, Aretha Franklin, and Suzzanne Douglas, just to name a few. What does Brenda have to say about fashion? “I am constantly awed and inspired by how Black Folks of all ages make fashion their own. I see a sense of pride and significance of the garments they wear and try to create a sense of history, because I want them to feel beautiful and relevant in the clothing as an extension of their personalities.”
