Hello, and welcome to Sorrel + The Sea! We are a black-owned, woman-owned and queer-owned shoppe in Atlanta, GA specializing in handmade, delicately radical paper products. My name is Killian. I am the founder, owner and maker of Sorrel + The Sea and all-around crafter & designer. I hope you’ll stay a while and find something really magic here. OUR STORY I took the first corporate job I could get out of the gates. I had just graduated from business and art school at Georgia State University, and I had to move to Minneapolis for 6 months to train for an inside sales position for a fucking steel company. I was PAID, but I was miserable, and returned home after just three months feeling defeated, depressed and worthless. I thought I was a failure. I didn’t have any money, and certainly didn’t have any job leads. So I took a little job heat pressing towels for a family company. I would be in their basement for hours working away, listening to creative podcasts, dreaming of ways that I could start my own creative business. I finally was able to secure a job as a shift supervisor at my local paper and gift store. This was where it all came together. I taught myself how to hand-letter so that I could teach classes at the shop. I learned how to book-bind and use a letterpress machine. Most importantly, I learned how to run a store. So Sorrel + The Sea was born. I have learned a lot since we officially formed in 2019. I am actually constantly learning and growing. There is something both empowering and intimidating about being self-taught in any capacity. My goal as a business owner is to create magic where I can, whether that is in what I make, how I package products, or how I interact with a customer. It’s all about the experience. WHY HANDMADE There is beauty in flaws. Handmade means that the imperfections of humans are reflected in the things we make. I don’t promise perfection, I promise authenticity. Every item that I make is full of intention and affirmation. I honestly believe that a part of our spirit is placed in the things that we make. That is why I choose handmade over manufactured as much as possible. It introduces us to a new humanity.
